Tegretol (Carbamazepine)
General information
Tegretol (carbamazepine) is an anticonvulsant. It works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain. It is used to treat epilepsy and trigeminal neuralgia. Carbamazepine is also used to treat bipolar disorder.
Directions
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use this medicine with a full glass of water daily, with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. For adults and children over 12 years old, the recommended dose is 200 mg twice daily. For children ages 6 to 12 years old, the recommended dose is 100 mg twice daily.
Precautions
You should talk with your doctor if you have: heart disease, arrhythmia, liver or kidney failure, any allergies. Let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Aged people can be more sensitive to side effects of the medicine.
Contraindications
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to it.
Possible side effect
The most common side effects of Tegretol included: dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting. Serious side effects are: hallucinations, depression, anemia, hypertension or hypotension. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these side effects.
Drug interaction
Tegretol can interact with many other medications: antibiotics (e.g. Erythromycin, Ketoconazole, Itraconazole), antipsychotic (e.g. Ziprasidone, Clozapine), Cyclosporine, Theophylline etc. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help immediately. The overdose symptoms are chest pain, nausea, irregular heartbeat, and feeling light-headed or fainting.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C). Store away from moisture and light. Keep it out of the reach of children and away from pets.
